Because the entry was illegal and, like any crime, would be investigated.
The entry may not have necessarily been illegal. One could overstay their visa. While being out of status / unlawful presence is a crime, it will most likely not be investigated. CBP doesn't have the resources for such investigations, and also, the illegal person is essentially doing what an outcome of such investigation would result in (deportation).
