The Opus is nice, but it's very 'trendy' - Think "W" before there were Ws. Due its night-clubbish nature it can be loud at times. The service in the restaurants is good, but the food is very hit and miss. It's in a trendy area of Vancouver called "Yaletown" which is about a 20 minute walk from downtown proper (or 5 minutes on the "Canada Line" subway which is just outside the door).
The St. Regis was a dive hotel that was completely gutted and renovated. It is right in the middle of downtown.
I've heard good things about the Loden - It's much closer to the 'heart' of downtown, as well as Stanley Park. I've never been to their restaurant, but it wins all kinds of awards. If you do a search in the FT Luxury Hotels forum there's a few postings about the Loden.
Bottom Line? Loden would likely be my choice, unless I wanted something uber-cool, in which case I'd pick Opus but eat elsewhere (lots of choices in Yaletown).
Have a good trip!
