Maybe they needed the seat to give to somebody who was paying the extra money to move up to it or for one of their elites? It's not unusual for a sweep to happen with people who have reservations in seats they should not be in.

Keep an eye on the upgrade standby list on the flight as it gets closer to see how long the stand by list gets. I would not assume that flight would have very many empty seats.
