Also, why can you not fly from NZ? If you are using miles, does your alliance not fly there?

Yes, I am from the States. I can't use my United flyer miles if I fly direct from NZ. AirNZ is a Star Alliance member, but it's very hard if not impossible to book a one-way award ticket to New Zealand. I haven't been able to figure out how to do it. That's how I got down here; I flew to Sydney on United flyer miles and then flew to Wellington a few days later.
