And is 2hrs enough time? There is a FRA-HAM flight 2hrs after the UA flight and another at 3hrs.

Provided your luggage is checked through to your final destination you don't need to collect it in FRA just to check it in again as you do in the US. Since you are on separate tickets it's important to get UA in SFO to check your luggage through to HAM. You should be able to OLCI 23 hours before departure of your FRA-HAM flight and print your BP which you can present when you check-in in SFO.
Two hours should be enough for this connection but if you miss your connecting flight because the incoming UA flight is late, LH will not rebook you on a later flight because you are on separate tickets unless your FRA-HAM ticket is fully flexible.
You do go through immigration and security screening in FRA , plus customs for your hand luggage only but in reality you won't notice the latter.
