I closed my card and reapplied for the same card I had about 5 days after canceling it. I had the card for a full year but didn't use it after getting the bonus. I did the same with my wife's account plus we both got the business cards with another 30K each for that. Explain how I did anything different than what the OP is saying. I got even more points than he is attempting to get.
Then you are quite lucky because last July a friend's wife only got 10K and was denied the additional 20K when AMEX told her she already got 20K before therefore she could only get an additional 10K to make up for the 30K offer. She had a few SPG cards in the past spanned a few years incl the business cards fwiw.

Are you saying you applied the 30K last Jul, and after you got the bonus you immediately canceled it and then re-applied the same 30K 5 days later? So the 1st 30K and the 2nd 30K has may be just a couple months interval in between? If so, may be AMEX has lags in its system and your prev 30K is not reflected in the system yet when you applied the 2nd 30K? Then we just discover something.

This is like the Citi's AA cards "for the first time customer only" thing - some got really lucky and were able to slip through the filter net but majority were caught. Though if enough time has passed, one becomes "new customer" again.

I am inclined to think your case is not the norm. Nonetheless, you and your wife are quite lucky to get the full 30K, personal and biz both.
