Did you apply for a "temporary" HKID card at your nearest British Consulate in America prior to July 1, 1997? Did you "renounce" your BDTC? Did you also register for your BN(O) nationality before July 1, 1997 since both you and your husband were BDTC? If so, you just need to take the "temporary" HKID card issued by the local British Consulate to the HK Immigration Department and they will process a permanent one for you.
No. We are already US Citizens prior to 1997.
However we still have the long expired British Passports (with the BDTC conditions stamped on them). Our HKG Tax return still carries our old HKID card numbers that were from prior to 1997. They never change to our US Passport Numbers despite we fill them in each and every year but it never replaces the numbers the IRD used on our file. The old HKID numbers are printed on the IRD form and the tax bill.

That is what I suspect. I dont have any doubt we would be able to obtain a new 3* HKID. It is just that the process takes several steps and obviously requires multiple visits to HKG in 6 to 12 months.
Last time we went was June 2009. It was so rainy, humid and hot, we loath to visit again in the rainy months. Last night upon random checking I actually saw F award seats available for June, not so much for Jul or Aug. Though I believe CX would open up award seats as it gets closer to departure dates. F actually has more availabilities than C, probably due to people feel business class is better value. After all the most important thing on such a long flight is a Flat Bed seat so one can actually sleep. I am quite surprised to see several dates in June the afternoon flight from YVR has 3 to 4 F award seats available - consider CX has only 9 F seats?
Sept is typhoon season. October is the Trade Fair that doubles the hotel rates. So these 2 months are out of question.
My plan is to go between November and February, depends on the award seats availability, for a 3-4 weeks trip - drop off the paper first then join a tour or 2 to China. Upon return, go through the HKG Immigration Interview and be done with it. Wishful thinking I know.
