Not really as a competitor aircraft to the A380, but rather a different view of what the market wants. Boeing believes that the long haul market would be better served by a large number of smaller jets flying point to point versus Airbus who thinks the market wants VLA serving hubs and then connecting from there to the smaller cities.

I think there is room for both, but it will be interesting to see how things work out.
