In regards to your child being over two years on the return, I thought the rules state that after two years they need their own seat hence why you need to purchase a child seat?
The fare that's applicable on the date of the outbound trip applies for the entire journey. He was a week short of two years when we began the trip, which qualified him for infant fare, and week older than two when we returned.
