I'm surprised that US airlines still permit ice to be scooped using plastic cups.

When my former airline operated to the UK, crew were specifically forbidden from using plastic cups to scoop ice due to health-and-safety regulations. Evidently there was a danger of plastic splintering and the shards getting served unknowingly with the ice. Specially approved ice scoops had to be provided by catering for each flight.
