my issue is I often fly into Canada. Before I could simply change to whichever flight was leaving first. Last summer all the early flights were 'overbooked'. By the time I got to the gate the agent told me that all 2 flights before mine went out with empty seats. There has to be a 'seat' to be sold but in reality there will always be no shows, so I see absolutely no benefit to Alaska in this policy.
