Traffic piled up as police stopped inbound traffic north of the airport.
The man who owns the package has been located, and FBI agents are investigating him, said Luis Casanova, a Dallas-based spokesman for the Transportation Security Administration.
"I think there was some music or sounds emanating from the package, and that's what's raised the concern," Casanova said.
Officials did not immediately say how the box had arrived at the airport, or if its owner was there too.
Authorities halted departing flights at about 9:45 a.m., and inbound flights were not allowed to pull up to the gates. Police also stopped inbound vehicle traffic north of the airport, Carney said.
