I've flown on MD-80s on 1700 mile flights with winter headwinds from STL to SEA, and a full passenger loads. I would imagine that they could simply fly a 180 mile flight with less fuel than for the 1700 mile trip and still be able to carry a full load. Then again, I'm not a pilot, so just a thought.
