Having suffered a broken toe on at least two occasions I can tell you that the treatment is almost invariably the same: tape two toes together, keep foot elevated and iced for at least a week (though nobody does) and wear comfortable shoes for a while. No heels although they never really told me that.

It is also one of the hardest injuries to assess since the real pain comes much later. A sprained toe is no better or worse than a broken one by the way. As you say yourself, even your wife thought 'nothing of it'.

You said they did not take her seriously. What do you mean? They did not give her ice? That would be bad. Except from providing ice there really is not much else to do. Per your own representation your wife did not take it too seriously either. What did you expect?
