We never check in bags for trips internationally or domestically. One can go away for 2 weeks with a pullman carryon. Some here in FlyerTalk can go away for a month with carryon luggage. Check out the resourcefulness of travelers here in FT. What international flight are you taking into or from LGA? Air Canada?

To the person who said what day of the week it will be a Tuesday, a weekday, and be in rushhour, unfortunately. We will be flying into LGA on a US Airways flight operated by Piedmont from Philadelphia. But before that we are flying from Newport News to Philadelphia, those are a connecting flight. So I don't know if we would be able to get our bags checked all the way through?
Wait, then you WILL be on a domestic flight into LGA, not international. You've got a lot of little flights. That's an even a greater risk that your bags could be lost especially if the connection times are as tight as what you have planned for yourself at LGA. Think about carry on. Very doable for international travel.
