The risk of checking right through, IMHO, is that if the connection is tight due to delayed arrival at LGA, the baggage might not get to the final destination if rixie888 somehow manages to get on that second flight. That can happen more often than not.
Extremely rare on US that pax make connection but bags don't. Particularly US at LGA where the gates are actually physically close together (if you are on the ramp in a cart).
