I fly "space available" on UA passes fairly frequently (my brother is a UA pilot). I have only had one gate agent check to make sure I was dressed properly. She had me step around the counter so she could she I was wearing something other than jeans. I think that in most cases, they either notice as you walk up to the counter or just assume you know the rules (dresscode is very clearly printed on the back of employee and companion passes).
