Larger denomination notes always seem more trouble than they're worth unless they're just being used to transfer cash between accounts or something along those lines.
In Sierra Leone a few years ago the largest note was the equiv of about 50p. This therefore meant that in a 'cash only' society we were forever carrying bulging pockets of notes just to get the most mundane of groceries.
NB: To the locals, of course, these meagre few Leones was considered a lot of money - we didn't forget that.
