I also like flights from SD that arrive in europe mid-day which makes hotel check in easy and allows you to get a nice night out on your first night. Even when I go to other European destinations I like using London (or Amsterdam) as a "hub".
I was considering this route for a leg of an upcoming DONE4, but decided to go SAN-LAX-LHR on AA for the lower fuel surcharges and ability to upgrade to F using a VIP. I agree SAN-LHR has a lot going for it, so I hope it does well.
