I would probably take the iPad with the Kindle app in this scenario. If you have a 3G iPad then the process of getting a local SIM card when you arrive for data is extremely easy. I found the iPad surprisingly useful on a recent trip to Australia for looking at maps, getting restaurant ideas, etc.
