You might want to look at flying on a paid ticket to Tokyo and going from there on a reward ticket using Malaysian Airlines via Kuala Lumpur. You'll have to call Delta to find out what the availability is. My wife and I have done this and it went just fine - although we did have to stay in a hotel just outside Narita on the way out as the Malaysian flights did not connect with Delta's flights.
