While the video of the emergency landing of the Asa flight at JFK was interesting to watch, you can't tell me that the camera user was paying full attention to the crew when he had to make sure that he was filming the incident. If it is a matter of life and death the smallest distraction can make a recoverable situation grave.

There are reasons why states have made texting while driving illegal an talking on the phone illegal too. It's a distraction when your mind should be focused on the road. For a similar reason, electronic devices must be powered off for takeoff and landing, when most problems can occur Only after you are off the runway upon landing should you be using your phone.

I made no assumptions. You said there was smoke in the cabin. You said your wife was calling you. I made my judgement on the evidence you provided. Smoke in cabin equals emergency in my book and that means attention should be paid to crew and not to cell phone conversations.
