Why would you risk having to have a 2-year old on your lap for a trip that long? If it's at all feasible, I'd suggest you just get tickets both ways. I say this as a mother who started buying my son his own seat well before he turned 2, although they were shorter US domestic flights. It was just more comfortable for everyone.
