Do you get 2x miles from CO when you fly Thai ?
I do agree you need to think about FF miles , Star alliance has United, Continetal, Thai and ANA plus maybe others I forgot like Lufthansa that go to BKK,
I took the direct Thai flight from LAX, it was a REAL long flight, I had an empty seat next to me so that helped, you land about 6am , if you do NOT sleep well you are a zombi all day, I would rather take the lAX-NRT-BKK flight that lands at 11pm or so.
If you have status with a non Star airline you might ask United-CO for a status match , they might give you a challange but with 2 flights you should get it quick
