There are a few ways people talk about flying standby.

One is airline employees and family who fly basically free plus taxes/fees. This is pure standby and does not entail buying a full-priced ticket. No points earned on these non-rev tickets.

Another way the standby term is used is for paid passengers who standby for an earlier flight. I only have experience doing this on HA but my experience is that this costs a fee to standby for an earlier flight unless you have status.
