'Sanomat' literally means 'messages' and I think about 50% of Finnish newspapers are called '(City) XXX Sanomat', which indeed stands for news or newspaper of that city/region. The paper you're most likely to see around is Helsingin Sanomat - News of Helsinki. BTW, it is the largest circulation newspaper in the Nordic countries.
