Besides, I'd have each parent carry his/her own passport plus one child's passport. This way they go in groups so to say.
This comes from someone who accidentally threw away a paper ticket (in the time before internet) when emptying his coat pockets after a long trip.

I wouldn't leave my wife and child behind for her to deal with the situation by herself. The downside of spreading things all over is not knowing when something is lost, until to happen to look wherever you had hidden it. And when checking in, trying to dig out 4 passports from 4 different places is not a very good idea either, and having to put them back in 4 different places makes it more likely that you will leave one of them behind.
