This is incorrect.

The free weekend coupon is for two days DURING that weekend period.

I've used plenty of these coupons, and they simply deduct two days out of your rental. So if you rent for three days, you pay for 1. If you rent for two days, you pay for none.

All very clear right on the front page of the http://www.avisfirst.com webpage:
...after every fourth rental of 2 or more days you make with us, we'll give you another 2-day weekend rental on us up to 8 times per year.
