It's definitely worth asking in this case, as you're willing to exchange miles and maybe even some cash. You don't ask, you don't get!

My experience is that leaving UK, Virgin are more strict/mean with upgrades (however you like to view it, as my fiance thinks they're mean lol) than when exiting states etc.
