If you want to have a "Plan B" then you should book an alternative flight NOW, not on the day of travel (when you may not be able to get a flight at all, and you'll be paying through the nose if you do). You'll just have to be prepared to throw away one of the two tickets.
Personally I think your friend's chances of making the connection are close to zero, especially if he is travelling on a non-EU passport.
