Airline pricing has little to do with distance and more to do with demand. Demand is such that UA can justify a higher sum price for DEN->LAX + LAX->OGG than simply DEN->OGG. You want to eligible for your upgrade to clear at your 72 hour window: that will cost you extra cash.
