I loved Zanzibar--and didn't go as part of a couple, but I can see your point. If you only have a few days it may be more trouble than it is worth.
Dar does have some beaches nearby, but I haven't been myself. Maybe post on the Tripdadvisor Africa forum for input? (just google it and try posting)
