Conclusion: I did some more research about how to get to a station near the airport on the Eastern line of SRT. The best cheap way to catch an SRT train on the Eastern line, to go to Aranya Prathet or Pattaya, if you don't mind roughing it, is to exit the airport on arrivals floor through door 5. Cross the first lane and wait for the free shuttle bus to the transportation center. From there, take public bus 517 to Hua Ta Khae station. I think, the fare is 15 Baht.

Sorry, that you found it difficult. But you made it through. Congratulations.

I didn't want to put the car before the camel. But I see what you mean. I should have but the conclusion in bold.
I know it was long, but it was necessary to convey the sense of frustration, some of it necessary, and the help I got from unexpected sources. IN the end, the answers to my questions were simple, but the process was rather arduous and lengthy, some what like my post.
In the end, I save probably a few dollars, but that's not the important part. It makes little difference to most of us here. But it does to someone on a budget, on a six month long trip. Every dollar counts then.
