NZ has pod-type seating (in fact, AC's seats are based off a similar design). The last time my wife and I flew NZ, we got seats right in the nose of the 747 so we could at least look at each other. The advantage of the NZ seats is that there is a guest seat / footrest in the pod so we could actually share a meal on the same table (does AC have the same?).
The AC footrest isn't certified as use as an ottoman.
If you need to chat to someone during the flight, sitting in the inboard seats and chatting across the divider, when seated upright, seems to work on the NZ/VS configuration.
