Newbie Primer and strategies?

Hi members,

I've been lurker for about a week and have somewhat gathered a bit of knowledge by piecing posts together. What i haven't been able to find is a good primer from someone looking to accumulate points.

I am flying to Scotland and Italy next summer from Atlanta and would like to accumulate points to pay for the trip. I also regularly fly domestic 2-3 times a year.

Here's what I gathered so far, and please correct me if I am wrong. There's just so much info here:

- credit card promos are they best possible way to gain points
- apply for multiple credit cards on the same day to avoid issuers from seeing pulls
- you can apply for new credit cards after 3-6 months, without incurring to many pulls. (I am assuming this is debatable, with as little as 1 month)
- There are cards best suited for hotel points. AMEX points are terrible for Starwoods points

I am married and own a business, so I am assuming it's possible to have 3 different accounts associated to me. Can you guys give me some pointers or provide a link to a past thread which can serve as a handbook for this crazy hobby?

Thanks guys!
