I would not expect it to be a problem to check the bag early on the same day. Perhaps call AA?

Thanks guys, yes it did occur to me to ask her to see if they would check it through, especially if the first leg with American. She is flying SFO-LAX-LHR, with the LAX-LHR on a different ticket.
Nice idea re seeing LA but she's already spent a fair time in LA in the past month so all she is going to do is buy an admirals Club daypass and chill out
