I agree with this statement. I was in Phuket, and it was beautiful. I was also in the Bahamas, and it was beautiful. But the problem, as you state, they're all the same thing. Hawaii is like any other tropical beach place.
Aargh. Parts of Honolulu do look like the wrong side of the tracks in San Diego, but if you get off the beaten path, you will quickly discover (if you keep your eyes and ears open) that Hawaii has a unique musical culture, some of the most spectacular scenery in the world (even on Oahu, around the Kualoa Ranch), and a unique racial mix. Oh, and try staying bored when Kilauea, on the Big Island, is erupting.
