Never been to AMS before, and am actually transiting through from ATH on my way to JFK. I'm guessing you pass into the non-Schengen side for US-bound flights and need to go through passport control at that point? Better to hear that you prefer the non-Schengen side lounge in that case
Correct - the queues for passport control can really vary -- I've had it take 5 minutes and almost 20 min!!
You will clear security @ the gate for your JFK flight...be sure to double check regarding any liquids if you purchase them. The shopping area on the non-Schengen side is quite nice.
