If you are flying out of SAT, SATTSO assures us that the frisk that he performs does not include genital contact. I have no reason to not believe him. My experience has been that the frisk can be done without genital contact. However, there are those that are not as properly trained as SATTSO and it does occur from time to time. As far has the grab and manipulation that has been reported here, I have not experienced that. The karate chop, yes.

Neither I nor SATTSO can have universal knowledge of all screening techniques and how they are applied. He does know the SOP, but some seem to be unable to follow SOP in other matters, so it would not surprise me to find that they are wrong here as well.

Long story short, genital contact is not necessary, but it happens, some more aggressively than others. Be aware that even if you choose the scanner and not opt out (an opt out guarantees a frisk), a pat down may still be done to resolve an anomaly found in the scan. If you get the walk through metal detector and pass, that is your best chance to evade the frisk.
