Great advice, and some of these country pubs surrounding Melbourne have some great food -- the analogy would be like the Carmel restaurants in the US (worth going out of the way for). I'm still amazed at the concept of pubs having some of the best food in town, at cheap prices; US bars go for quantity over quality when they do have food, quite a different approach by and large.
It's not a country pub - anything but, being on Swan St, Richmond - but the
Vaucluse Hotel has some of the best pub food in Melbourne.
