When I used MSY B checkpoint in April, you could self-select to the left lane once you passed the ID check. But that was not the case last week. They had a rope up separating the lanes. If you entered the checkpoint on the left side of the dividing wall at the top of the ramp (elite lane plus one general lane), you were funneled to the leftmost xray, which was WTMD only. But the entry lanes on the right of the wall led to the right-side, where the scanners were in use, and there was no way to cross over to the safe left side.
