AA Service on empty-ish flights

I find the service on AA to be generally good (worse than Southwest or Jetblue, better than Delta, UA, etc.) I've been on 2414 (LAX-DFW) several times in the past few months. This is a 763 and for some reason is very often half full or less.

I have noticed that often on these low-load flights the service is dreadful compared to fuller flights. I mean really noticeably different. The FA's congregate up front or in the back, neglecting passengers as they chat away. It almost seems like they give themselves the flight off, or permission to hang out because of the poor passenger load. They'll give drinks and not come to collect trash. Or not check back to refill drinks or clear a meal tray in a timely manner.

This is just an observation that as a business owner I notice and would correct if it happened at my company.
