I'm okay with it too as I have perfected the art of carry-on bag packing. I do, however, think it would have been respectful to notify passengers via email of the change. Created confusion and havoc since the GA announced it 30 seconds before boarding.

If it cannot fit in the size checker at the gate it has no business trying to be stuffed in an overhead or being gate checked anyway.
The problem here is that the bins in all the other aircraft are much larger. For example I often start or finish on a CRJ but the main leg of my trip is on a 777 or 747. My standard carry-on fits just fine for the 15 hour leg of my trip, then for the last hour it gets pink tagged, which is expected and no problem. But if they try to check it all the way through so I don't have it on the long haul part of my trip, that will be a problem.
IMO the solution here is to gate check for people who have connections over 4 hours long and do a regular check for people who are only on smaller regional flights. And/or allow gate check for medallions and make everyone else check.
