I'm a college English teacher/writer and my husband a student, so both of the words "travel" and "cheap" are vital to our existence. We love the miles but don't accumulate many in our jobs.

Another question - how far ahead should we start looking to get tickets booked? Summer travel, of course, is ideal but we'd take the kids out of school for travel if need be.

Start looking as soon as the booking window opens. From where in the U.S. are you starting? Some AA partner carriers have nonstops to Europe from different U.S. cities.

If you are at or near an AA gateway city, you might be able to get a Summertime one-way to Europe for 20,000 miles per person if you fly from a nearby city to the gateway prior to May 15, and "stop over" at the gateway before your flight to Europe.
