Well, in Shanghai the D trains running to Hangzhou/Suzhou/Nanjing before the G trains were launched you could use the auto machines at the main railway station.

I never carried my PP on day trips riding trains. I've been asked many times at the security entrances when the security guys were checking for Chinese 身份证, but I just always said I don't have one since I'm a US citizen.
But yes, all hotels require a PP so overnights I always had. But still when they checked I often said I don't have a 身份证 as I don't like pulling out my passport at the security stop as hordes of Chinese are knocking me over with their million bags as they rush to board and go through the ridiculous security.
