I did not get upgraded on the DTW-DCA flight on a Tuesday morning (10 a.m.) flight. I was 2nd on 4 seats when I checked in on line night before, and then I was 1st on two vacant seats, but didn't make it. I had never missed an upgrade between DCA and DTW over the last 12 years,
You are thniking from the prespective of FO and above, but if you have no status with the airline and have more than one checked bag then you are actually saving money taking the offer.

DL isn't the only one that does this either. I flew my mom LGA-YYZ on AA last year and they wanted $40 for an upgraded. I would have had to pay $25 for her checked bag so to me it was only $15 to get priority bags, priority boarding a nicer seat and a couple of drinks on the plane. Worth it even on a short flight.
