PHOENIX (AP) — An American Airlines flight headed to Chicago was forced to return to Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport after the pilot reported smoke in the cockpit.

An airport spokeswoman says the pilot of Flight 1172 landed safely and returned to the gate Sunday morning. The MD-80 was carrying 145 passengers.

American's website show the flight departed at 10:01 a.m. MST. The airport says the pilot reported the emergency six minutes later.

American Airlines did not immediately respond to a message seeking additional information.
