If that were the case that you are suggesting...I wouldn't fly this airline if it only allowed me to upgrade on a full Y seat!
Buy any one of a plethora of discounted J fares available then, if you want a confirmed seat. SE's do *not* keep the airline afloat any more than "granny" who travels once a year on the cheapest Y ticket possible, if said SE's are buying the el-cheapo fares. Ever heard the misnomer, "we lose money with every sale, but make it up on volume.."?
