SE/E's don't give them even so much as a dime of incremental cash. LMU's do. I'd personally expect them to try and derive revenue for all seats possible, and to only offer the leftovers for E/SE's in confirmed Y seats.

It's us SE's and MM'ers that are keeping this airline afloat currently.
If that were the case that you are suggesting...I wouldn't fly this airline if it only allowed me to upgrade on a full Y seat!
