There may a be a difference between CO and UA on a legal routing to OZ. Last year I found a route to SYD via ICN. On the phone I was told that that routing would require two awards and was not legal for a single North America to Oz award (called back twice).
But, I was able to find legal routing to SYD this month on CO using the Web search thorugh BKK,ICN and SIN, so maybe its possible through CO
UA has some odd rules regarding the amount of actual miles you can travel on an award ticket...I'm betting the USA-ICN-SYD award ticket was more miles than UA will allow someone to travel on a USA-SYD award ticket.
CO has no such limitations on their award tickets (only that for Australia that you fly transpacific).
